Theatre Green Book

Towards sustainable theatres

Buro Happold is at the forefront of the cultural sector’s approach to green recovery and is delighted to have collaborated with the UK theatre industry to create The Theatre Green Book.

Commissioned by the Theatres Trust and Association of British Theatre Technicians, ‘The Green Book’ has buy-in and collaboration across the industry and presents a clear direction and joint pathway for action towards sustainable theatres.

The creation of The Green Book follows in-depth studies, workshops and consultations with the broadest section of the UK theatre community. Each of the three volumes contains guidance, standards and toolkits written and compiled by the Buro Happold team drawn from all parts of the theatre community, that provide guidance for different roles, scales and typologies of theatre making and operations.

Publications

Volume 1: Sustainable Productions

Provides practical measures around processes and systems of making a show. All roles in the making process are covered and this volume concludes with a set of industry standards.

Volume 2: Sustainable Buildings

This volume focuses on practical approaches to decarbonise theatre buildings and reduce their environmental impact.

At present, a self-assessment or “home survey” tool developed by Buro Happold is being trailed by partner theatres, that will help theatres create a sustainability plan for their buildings.

Volume 3: Sustainable Operations

This third and final volume, Sustainable Operations, covers everything else theatres do, from catering to rehearsals, offices to travel.

Building on theatre operators’ own expertise, and the knowledge of theatres who have already begun this journey, Sustainable Operations provides solutions to those challenges, and offers a step-by-step approach to addressing them.
