Environmental input to masterplans

Providing valuable environmental insight for clients

We help clients mitigate the environmental risk, manage and reduce environmental impact and maximise opportunities for environmental net gain (ENG) during the development of their masterplan.

Each project site comes with its unique environmental conditions and challenges. Our priority is to understand our client’s needs, and then assist the design team to action solutions to site specific conditions. Our team has experience in helping clients mitigate the environmental risks and impacts of urban development, as well as maximising opportunities related to a wide range of factors, such as ecology, biodiversity, air quality and social value.

Ensuring all opportunities and constraints are considered

During the concept masterplanning phase, our team is involved from the outset to ensure the site is analysed for both opportunities and constraints. Where environmental requirements are noted, we ensure that these are flagged to the designers so they can be considered during the project’s development.

As part of the masterplanning process, we advise on the approval process, in addition to any relevant consenting strategies that the client should consider for the next steps of the project. We provide guidance and strategies for consideration across a range of environmental factors, such as climate change, air quality, archaeology and cultural heritage, environmental noise, flood risk management and landscaping.

Providing design input on EIA projects

When managing an EIA, we facilitate specialist environmental input into the design of a development. When undertaking baseline assessments, we highlight the environmental constraints to both the client and wider design team, which in turn, influences further design iterations. Where needed, we also provide further feedback as the design evolves.

Thameside West

London, UK

Thameside West is a mixed-use development on the north bank of the River Thames around the Royal Victoria Docks. Buro Happold has been involved with the development since 2012, initially supporting the assessment of the constraints of the masterplan.

The river frontage is designed to ensure that the development maximises the benefits of flood defence, public realm, ecology, and, most importantly, the value of the riverside setting to the wider masterplan development. Our team added significant value through proposing to take the spoil from the site and use the clean parts for remediation.
