Oliver Plunkett, CEO

We are an international, integrated consultancy of engineers, designers and advisers. For over 45 years, we have built an unrivalled reputation by delivering creative, value-led solutions for the benefit of people, places and planet.

Described by our clients as ‘passionate’, ‘innovative’ and ‘collaborative’, Buro Happold is synonymous with the delivery of exceptionally complex projects on every continent, working with the world’s leading architectural practices and organisations, such as the United Nations, UNESCO and C40 Cities.

Through our global community of driven, world-leading engineering, advisory and design professionals, we are acting to address major challenges in an ever-evolving world.

Our values

1. We value human wellbeing, and are discontented with limitations. We commit to taking this as seriously for our people as our projects.

2. We are a diverse, one-firm culture. When we get it right, it sings. Internal barriers are always to be overcome through inclusivity and equity above all else.

3. We embrace mutual responsibility. It is easy to default to individual success. Teams need to share success and failure in the same way.

4. We are more than a business. We care about the legacy of our work. We have a responsibility of care as an employer and influencer in the shaping of the world.

5. Sustainability is intrinsic to the economic and social impact of our work. Going beyond compliance requires challenging preconceptions and taking extra steps.

6. It takes courage to create. Our culture fosters a dynamic between technology and empathy to gain deeper insight, unleash imagination, and manage risk.

If you live by these values, join us.

Our climate commitments

Global Sustainability Report 2023 Cover

Buro Happold is working towards an equitable and green recovery, adapting our business to mitigate climate change and the biodiversity crisis. Our Global Sustainability Report outlines how we are progressing with our sustainability journey, looking through the lenses of our projects and operations.

We have set three important targets:

1. Reduce our own operational carbon emissions by 21% by 2025

2. Design all new build projects to be net zero carbon in operation by 2030

3. Reduce embodied carbon intensity of all new buildings, major retrofits and infrastructure projects by 50% by 2030.

Our net zero routemap lays out a framework that will support two of our core climate targets. By 2030 our goal is to design all new build projects to be net zero carbon in operation and to reduce the embodied carbon intensity of all new buildings, major retrofits and infrastructure projects by 50% from a 2020 baseline.

We foster a culture where all our people, irrespective of gender identity, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy, race, age, religious belief, or disability, have the support and opportunities to reach and exceed their potential.

Our heritage

What began as a workforce of seven, more than 45 years ago, in the city of Bath, is now a business with over 2,500 employees in nearly 40 different locations across the globe.

Ted Happold, the founder of Buro Happold, had a vision for an interdisciplinary engineering team that could collaborate on projects that inspire people.
