From the first interrogation of the site, through to the consideration of design, safety and economy are our guides

Buro Happold’s ground engineering consultants provide clients with a capability that spans structural, building, civil and environmental engineering.

We employ an integrated ground engineering approach where our geotechnical and geoenvironmental specialists work together in multi-disciplinary teams. This was particularly crucial in delivering the site-wide basement car park at the Battersea Power Station Development, London.

From your projects earliest stages through to end delivery, you can be assured of our capability in managing all possible ground related risks, such as contaminated land. We identified and treated contamination hotspots on the former industrial site of the Bath Western Riverside residential development, unlocking the development potential of 70 acres of land.

You can expect safe and economic ground solutions because we conduct extensive site investigations and assessments. Just one example is Harvard University’s Allston Science Complex, USA, which enabled the construction of the 22,500m2 basement structure.

Geoenvironment

The redevelopment of brownfield sites is fundamental to the delivery of safe and sustainable developments. Urban regeneration and the increasing recognition of the need to conserve green spaces means that many new developments are now planned on such old industrial sites. With this transition comes special challenges such as cost, risk to people and the environment, and the management of potential environmental and financial liabilities. However, it also provides opportunities for bringing derelict land back into beneficial use (providing homes, jobs and places for recreation), remediating contamination and enhancing the natural and built environments.

Buro Happold’s geoenvironmental team has extensive experience working on sites with contaminated soils, polluted waters and hazardous gases and vapours. This experience extends from the initial investigation, identification and assessment of contamination, through to the resolution of technical, engineering and environmental issues that arise on sites during remediation and redevelopment. Our team understands the commercial and technical issues of land contamination and has a proven track record of successful project delivery related to; property transaction (acquisition and divestiture), requirements under planning (NPPF) as well as potential liabilities under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act.

Our expertise covers all technical disciplines and spans all phases from initial due diligence, intrusive investigation, risk assessment, remedial design and through to final verification.

Our geoenvironment services include:

  • Research and publication of good practice guidance
  • Due diligence
  • Pre-planning assessment
  • Ground investigation
  • Remediation
  • Verification
  • Expert witness
  • Risk assessment for;  Human health, Controlled waters and Hazardous gases and vapours
