Consultancy for the digital built environment

Technology is in our DNA

We believe in the transformative power of technology. Buro Happold has built a world-class reputation for delivering creative solutions – often using novel technologies.

As a trusted advisor, we take pride in understanding the emerging technologies that will make a real difference to our clients.  From building performance management to masterplan-scale smart infrastructure – at every level, we are encoding our design and consultancy with digital tools. They navigate, interrogate and provide insight from the data generated by our built environment.

This unique approach enables us to attract the brightest minds to our global consultancy and give them the space and opportunity to deliver exceptional digital solutions at every stage of your project.

Maximised Impact

As a global network of experts, we also bring the benefit of being able to deliver at scale. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our technology offer. Informed by the more than 40 vertical specialisms, we are driving as well as simply adopting technological efficiencies.

Our focus is on the quality of the information we can deliver through this digital revolution. It covers everything from technology specialisms such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), information management and digital twinning, through to our stand-alone software-as-a-service products that are helping to drive change across the industry, such as SmartViz.

Our analytics tools enable owners and operators to better understand how their assets and people are performing in real-time. These insights help inform key decisions in terms of space efficiency, human wellbeing, productivity, and climate resilience.

Our specialist engineers developed bespoke in-house optimisation routines to model and analyse numerous options for the structure to achieve the Museum of the Future’s iconic shape.

Our airport analytics sketch-to-software process, shown above, enables people flow analysis to identify bottlenecks and improve airport design.

Our digital consultancy services include:

expertise At every stage

Planning: Strategic consulting

Our digital consultants help you gain a clearer picture of the current situation through expert analysis and set your project on the right path for achieving success.

Our digital tools help uncover potential opportunities or diagnose bottlenecks and highlight areas to prioritise. Whether you are looking to retrofit an existing building, improve a cityscape or build something new, we help you leverage the benefits early consideration offers.

Our work can help provide proof of concept and secure stakeholder buy-in by providing future-gazing analysis of outcomes. Examples of our work at this stage include Vodafone, where our work demonstrated opportunities for the client to save over $40m.

Implementation: advice, engineering, and design

We will work with you at every stage of implementation, whether it is for a new build project at RIBA stages 2 to 6, or the design and implantation of digital systems into buildings/infrastructure/cities/campus (smart assets) and into delivery (digital PMO, IM).

For existing assets, our consultants can advise on the design, procurement and implementation of systems at an organisational level.  We will advise on how a new system should be implemented, in what order, and how to buy it and implement use cases (design).

We can work alongside clients to create a tailored design and support delivery, through a project management office (PMO) model, information management service, or by supporting the necessary procurement. At the building scale, we can design technology infrastructure against use cases.  At the campus/city scale we can also support the design and implementation of information system architecture.

Run: “as a service” tools and support

Our services include Digital Twin “as a service”, running the systems/infrastructure “as a service” and the commissioning and running of new build digital systems “as a service”.

We provide a digital optimisation service and help answer important questions such as ‘how well is it running?’ or GAP analysis.

For your existing portfolio, we can provide full implementation of our building analytics tools as a digital twin and run digital services “as a service”.

Review, check and optimise

Once building or infrastructure assets are operational, our specialists can help review, check, and optimise to advise you and ensure everything is behaving as expected and course correct if required.

Our digital consultants can provide ongoing insights after handover for new builds and projects, providing post-occupancy evaluation of building performance and diagnostic services. Turning building data from digital platforms and dashboards into actionable information can help identify emerging opportunities and solve building performance issues through expert diagnostic analysis.

For existing buildings, our digital services include analytics, performance diagnostics and optimisation and independent reviews to ensure building managers, investors, and occupiers are getting the most out of their facilities. Examples of our work at this stage include Trinity College Dublin, where our analytics and insights provided the team with new layers of added value through the careful interrogation of data.

Rendering of Keflavik Airport expansion

Keflavik Airport

Iceland

Keflavik Airport – Iceland’s international airport – has developed a long-term expansion masterplan, which will transform the airport’s capabilities over the next two decades.

Buro Happold is bringing its digital expertise as a BIM lead to the digital coordination of this complex multi-stakeholder project, which will see a 20,000m2 expansion of the Leif Erikson Air Terminal. The Buro Happold team has developed a sophisticated digital asset and project management system, incorporating a range of interconnecting software feeds, principally from BIM360, Microsoft SharePoint, Revit DB and Power BI.

We worked with the client to develop an ambitious unified system of references and activity codes, which would be used by all stakeholders working on the project. Our team also developed a range of new templates for data gathering, activity directories and data clash report systems.

We built a digital dashboard to offer manageable data insights on the project as it evolves, which the client would ultimately like to expand into a master control system and facilities management toolkit for the wider airport.

Smart Energy Digital Twin for Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC)

Wales, UK

We produced a digital twin of a district heating energy network, which allowed the client to assess a range of emerging energy technologies through live computational analytics. The platform monitors everything from temperatures across all buildings in the network to flow velocity and pressure at any point in the system in real-time.

This live data supports the optimisation of the client’s investment by reducing the capacity for waste within the system. It automates optimised plant, pipe sizing, and network routing based on peak load analysis.

The tool facilitates a complex phased development plan, with the platform displaying dynamic comparison visualisations for a range of different processes in the system. The tool allows design iterations to be rapidly analysed as soon as new building data becomes available, reducing costs and maximising comfort to the end consumers.

Our specialist consultants provided strategic advice to the client on the phased upgrade of the existing legacy Building Management System (BMS) and controls equipment. Identifying energy and future-proofing requirements and delivering scopes of works and specifications for tender.

Our interventions to upgrade the existing BMS included optimised control programming and future-proofing features such as embedding semantic tagging standards and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity to enable a diagnostic solution to be deployed.

This approach is enabling our clients to evolve against a wider strategy of estate upgrades and net zero carbon pathways.
