Ground engineering

BuroHappold’s geotechnical group provides its clients with a capability that spans structural, building and civil engineering. As part of our integrated ground engineering approach we work closely with our geoenvironmental colleagues from the earliest stages of the project to deliver economical solutions in terms of approvals, cost and programme. This provides our clients with the assurance they need in managing the risk from unforeseen ground conditions.

We have expertise in advanced ground investigation techniques as well as a complete range of geotechnical design options for all foundation types, basements, retaining walls, tunnels, bridges, earthworks, reclamation, slope engineering, ground treatments and water retaining structures. We work closely with contractors in the design of temporary works, dewatering, instrumentation and monitoring. Aided by advanced finite element analysis we predict ground movements and water flow to help our clients overcome the challenges of working in close proximity to other development.

Our broad civil engineering experience combined with specialist analytical expertise working within the overall multi-disciplinary environment of BuroHappold, allow us to provide a focused, quality service across a diverse range of sectors. These include low and high-rise buildings, brownfield regeneration sites, waterside and coastal developments, transport infrastructure and hubs, energy and masterplanning. Our engineering solutions are developed to ensure potential risks are properly managed whilst maintaining value added benefits for the client. Vital to this is maintaining active academic links and investment in our own R&D programme.

BuroHappold has extensive experience working with contaminated land, impacted waters and in identifying and resolving technical issues that arise on sites during development. Our team understands the commercial and technical issues of land contamination and has a proven track record of successful project delivery related to requirements under planning (NPPF) as well as potential liability under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act. Our expertise covers all technical disciplines and spans all phases from initial due diligence, intrusive investigation, assessment and remedial design, through to final verification.
