Sarah joined Buro Happold in the Bath office as a Trinity College Dublin graduate in January 2001. Having completed her PhD on the response of concrete to impact, she decided to put what she had learnt into practice and ‘build things!’.

Working for Buro Happold over the last 20 years has presented Sarah with many opportunities to pursue this calling and she regards herself as uniquely lucky to have worked on several challenging technical projects that have developed and honed her skills as an engineer.

She is one of the practice’s leaders in the field of building vibrations and dynamics, and consults widely in this area, particularly on mixed use, transport stations, sports structures, hospitals and laboratories projects.

During her time at Buro Happold, Sarah has developed a passion for the delivery of multidisciplinary projects across several sectors, ensuring a high quality of delivery and client satisfaction either as the project leader or director.

Sarah spent three years in Qatar leading the supervision of the engineering works on Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Msheireb Downtown Doha Project, formerly known as the Heart of Doha. This project intends to entirely recreate the centre of Doha in a sustainable and sympathetic way for the 21st century. Read about Sarah’s inspiring work here.

Prior to this, Sarah was a visiting lecturer at the University of Bath and the University of West of England, teaching structural engineering to architects. She also was responsible for developing a ‘structural scheming’ course which she delivered to all pre-chartered structural engineers in Buro Happold worldwide. Sarah mentors engineers and technicians as part of her work, and is chartered with both the Institution of Civil, and Structural Engineers in the UK.

More recently, Sarah has been appointed Chair of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) and Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) Net Zero Task Force. She is also on the Advisory Board to the School of Management at the University of Bath and Vice Chair of the Construction Council of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). She has previously also served on their South West Council in the period 2017-2019.

Sarah became a Partner in 2017 and is the UK Managing Director, a role which seeks to support and unify all of the engineering teams, in the structures, building environment and specialist consulting disciplines, from the five offices in the UK.
