Lighting and Facades: Finding the Balance for Joint Design

Lighting considerations for the enhancement of facades and architecture.

This masterclass touches upon the synergy of facade and lighting design, focusing on artificial lighting. Eight basic principles of lighting design on a building facade are analysed. The relative ‘’rules of thumb’’ that can be incorporated at the early design stage are outlined.

Carolina Florian

Carolina is Regional Head of Lighting in Buro Happold, with over 15 years of inter-disciplinary experience across various sectors and areas of lighting design including iconic projects in urban lighting masterplanning, daylight, exterior and interior lighting design.

She is currently leading the BuroHappold lighting team on the Stratford Waterfront East Bank development in London, which includes new buildings for the London College of Fashion (UAL), V&A, Sadler’s Wells and BBC. She also collaborates with our Cities Group on key infrastructure projects such as The New Danube Bridge in Budapest and AMAALA, a luxurious and integrated resort across three sites on the shores of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.

Her diverse background and project portfolio have enabled Carolina to work successfully with multi-disciplinary teams bringing together an innovative approach and various design skills.

Chrysanthi Anastasiou

Chrysanthi joined Buro Happold in 2015 as a facade intern, and as a graduate facade engineer at 2016 in the London team. Prior to joining Buro Happold, Chrysanthi completed her Civil Engineering Diploma at University of Thessaly, and her MSc in Building Technology and Physics at the Civil Engineering department of Delft University of Technology.

Chrysanthi currently holds the role of a senior facade engineer, and works as a specialist consultant for a variety of complex facade projects.
