EQ development achieves first SmartScore certification globally

The EQ building in Bristol, UK has become the first building in the world to achieve SmartScore certification. The news follows the launch of SmartScore earlier this year, which saw 70 buildings from seven countries commit to enabling a more collaborative, innovative and dynamic future.

Owned and managed by Commercial Estates Group (CEG), the 200,000ft2 office building has achieved SmartScore Gold certification. SmartScore is the global certification for smart buildings, championing cutting edge technology in real estate. Providing a global standard, SmartScore identifies best in class smart buildings that deliver an exceptional user experience, drive cost efficiency, meet high standards of sustainability and are fully future-proof. EQ is also certified WiredScore Platinum and comprises one of 20 WiredScore certified buildings owned by CEG.

Working alongside WiredScore and Buro Happold to achieve this landmark SmartScore certification is fantastic for CEG and Bristol. The exceptional design of EQ and the technological prowess it embraces responds to the step change in the way people are working and occupying space. This drive to meet our customers’ needs now, and in the future, has delivered a global benchmark in one of the UK’s most exciting cities.

Nick Lee, Development Director at CEG

Upon completion in early 2023, EQ will offer the next generation of office buildings in the Bristol market. The visionary, state-of-the-art space will integrate the practical demands of modern businesses, with the desire to live and work sustainably, all by placing technology at its core. Setting a new standard for commercial development, EQ has been designed to provide the optimum blend of innovative, flexible workspace and employee wellbeing.

Securing the first global SmartScore certification is a landmark achievement for CEG and the wider industry and, in doing so, demonstrates its commitment to the future of an ever-changing real estate landscape. Smart buildings will play a key role in creating more attractive, efficient and sustainable workplaces that allow individual productivity to flourish and where people can meet and collaborate. As we move closer to a return to workspaces, ensuring tenants are benefiting from the best possible working environments will be paramount to maintaining the dynamism of our cities.

We are immensely proud to be the first to achieve certification under SmartScore. Working with forward-thinking clients like CEG means we are able to set and execute a strategy that delivers a truly smart building. It is a building that delivers tangible value to all the project stakeholders from investors, developers, tenants, end users, and all the backstage operations that create a modern, service first and agile workplace.

Tom Hopton, Digital Building Consultant, Buro Happold

“I applaud SmartScore for setting a standard that will help our industry, our clients and end users to cut through the noise and confusion around smart buildings. The evidence submission was straightforward, the smart score team extremely helpful, and I was just delighted to hear that we had achieved the first global certification,” said Tom Hopton.

Buro Happold has been working closely with CEG and the design team since 2019 to weave low energysustainable design and technology through every level of the building. The result is a world-leading commercial development that stretches the boundaries of office design while retaining a sustainable ethos at its core.
