Positive+ Future Roundtable: Materiality and Circular Economy

As part of Buro Happold’s Positive Future campaign, we brought experts together to discuss some of the biggest challenges facing the construction sector.

Starting with materiality and circular economy, this roundtable focused on how we can prepare for the decarbonised construction sector of the future.

A major contributor to carbon emissions is how materials are produced, used, and then reused within construction. To meet ever-nearing sustainability targets, the approach to materials needs to change. Below, you can find a reflective look back on the session, which took place in April 2023.

Franck Robert, Andy Keelin, Anna Beckett, Ellie Moore and Jonathan Roynon were on hand to offer the expertise of Buro Happold throughout the discussion. While guests from Derwent London, Exigere, Mace Group, Gardiner and Theobald, John F Hunt, and Kanda Consulting, all offered their unique insights on the circular economy.

The Positive Futures campaign has encouraged our experts to look far ahead into the future, with an open mind to concepts that are only barely breaking the surface in the present. Our Gen Z on climate hub highlights how engaged our young engineers are with the future of our globe, with the Built Environment for the Future series particularly focused on this area. We have also looked at how current issues may be mitigated in the future, such as when Denas Karnauskas discussed ways we could minimise respiratory illness through the built environment.

Buro Happold is proud of our selection of specialist masterclasses, helping to educate the industry on a range of important topics, pivotal to tackling some of the built environment’s biggest challenges.

Towards the end of this year, join us for an engaging and thought-provoking roundtable discussion on the topic of Demolition versus Refurbishment! As cities continue to grow and evolve, the question of whether to demolish old structures or renovate and repurpose them has become increasingly pertinent.
