Delivering real-time assistance, proven solutions, and strategic advice, to our clients to navigate uncertainty with confidence.

Introducing security concepts into the earliest phases of project design and planning enables comprehensive and cost-effective security planning. Incorporating these activities reinforces long-term capital and operational planning capabilities.

Operational risk and protective security

Fostering risk management and resiliency in any organization requires a systematic process to identify threats, vulnerabilities and risks. Specification of mitigation and preparedness strategies and linked to a continuous improvement loop to support changing conditions.

We provide a simple but effective model, the Resiliency Cycle, to facilitate organisational and operational resiliency. This provides a logical flow of activities to foster resiliency in the early phases of program development or at later stages of the program life cycle. Our team utilises various models to support each step on the Resilience Cycle; including but not limited to; Assess, Mitigate, Prepare, Respond, and Recover.

Operational resilience

The world is characterised by increasing complexity and accelerated change, resilience is about the ability of an organisation to adapt, in an ever-evolving world of risk, to ensure continued success and growth in market share.

By simply responding to disruption effectively, a business may consider its level of resilience to be adequate; however, in many cases, foresight is limited. Complex organisations require adaptive strategic management approaches, that not only respond to business shifts, but anticipate them.

By anticipating and adapting to ever changing environments, organisations should  be able to survive and thrive into the future. Organisations need to seek assurance beyond traditional risk management and business continuity practices and strive to achieve organisation resilience.

Facility security design

The Buro Happold approach to Facility Security Design follows a systematic methodology that applies internationally recognised techniques to develop a fully integrated physical security program design to protect the facility, its occupants and the owners against attack by terrorist, criminal and other threat actors. The methodology is built upon the foundation of the principles of defence in depth:

Deter: stop or displace the attack

Detect: confirm an attack, launch the response

Delay: prevent the attack from impacting an asset

Mitigate: minimise the consequences of an attack against the organisation/asset

Response: actions to minimise the impact of an attack on operations

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

London, UK

Buro Happold provided multidisciplinary services from concept through to completion to help Tottenham Hotspur achieve a 61,000 capacity state-of-the-art, FIFA compliant stadium.

Our security team were involved with the design from planning through to handover in the delivery of all security systems and applications. This was achieved through close consultation with the club and local stakeholders including the Police, CTSA and DOCO to understand the designs
basis threats which allowed the security team to implement agreed proportionate and appropriate security systems and their application.

Our work enables the stadium to host a variety of events and the capability to operate smoothly and effciently, whilst meeting all the appropriate standards and legislation.

astana rail station

Astana Nurly Zhol Rail Station

Kazakhstan

Buro Happold delivered a security strategy which delivered comfort and optimal security to the stations’ thousands of users, matching the requirements of the Kazakh Rail Authority.

Our security services provided both vehicle and visitor screening abilities against a backdrop of visitor comfort and experience within a complex and difficult environment that can change its operational stance change due to threats. The security therefore had to be effective immediately within a scalable solution.

Our security design encompasses both physical and technology mitigation measures proportionate to the design based risk at any given operational environment. The technical security solution, although discreet, was based on the local laws, whilst being mindful of the cultural issues to provide the correct level of surveillance.

Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham, UK

Delivering a new departures and arrival facility for this major transport hub in the West Midlands, Buro Happold was appointed to test the design of the new Passenger Screening Area to ensure it provides operational security, functionality and passenger comfort.

As part of the study, we utilised a combination of static and dynamic simulation models to assess the design proposal and analyse passenger movements. To ensure a safe and efficient passenger movement system, our team utilised in-house systems to propose the introduction of Smart Lane technology.

Externally we developed a blast study to mitigate any threat from a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). The finding helped to inform the structural and façade detailing and material selection, as well as helping t inform the new terminal delivery routes for emergency vehicles and dedicated secured vehicles in close proximity to the terminal building.

Hounslow Civic Centre

London Borough of Hounslow, UK

Using our status on the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES), we liaised with the client corporate body and statutory stakeholders to establish and review the design teams’ Stage 2 incumbent design and to plan a route forward through the risks and threat recommendations made by the MPS ‘Designing Out Crime Officers’.

The evaluation of the design, benchmarked against the MPS recommendations and other civic buildings in London, allowed us to recommend significant upgrades to the security elements of the development.
