Energy planning

Helping clients build clear and robust strategic energy plans

As one of the keys to unlocking net zero energy systems, our energy planning consultants help clients make the transition to low-carbon solutions in response to our changing climate.

Buro Happold’s multidisciplinary team offers energy planning services from local to national scale, covering community and campus energy plans, Local Area Energy Plans (LAEP), through to regional and national energy planning.

Our energy planning consultants work closely with municipalities around the world to carefully analyse the current structure of their energy dependencies and requirements, and to make sense of the wealth of data that can be gathered around energy usage.

We then work with clients to build a clear and robust strategic plan for rebalancing their energy systems towards renewables, identifying the most impactful, bespoke route map to empower them to evolve and decarbonise their systems.

Unlocking economies of scale in energy planning

The modelling is complex, requiring multidisciplinary expertise, but is a powerful process for developing compelling scenarios for change. Energy plans unlock economies of scale by identifying measures for groups of buildings, post codes, areas or entire regions.

Local Area Energy Planning (LAEP) is becoming the standard approach for local authorities in England and Wales. Buro Happold is supporting a range of these LAEP projects across the country, and has built a proven expertise in the methodologies behind successful LAEP processes. In Scotland, Buro Happold has helped to develop the Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy (LHEES) methodology for Scottish Government. We have worked on similar municipality-level energy system plans around the world, from the Middle East to the United States – providing the tools and insight to allow communities to create their integrated route maps towards net zero.

Helping you plan and communicate energy transition

As well as building the integrated technical solutions and spatial planning strategies for change, Buro Happold’s long experience of working on complex, multi-stakeholder projects allows us to play a key role in communicating the need for change. As experienced energy planning consultants, we work closely with clients to interpret and represent the wealth of energy data as compelling, behaviour-changing presentations and communications, targeted at every level of stakeholder.
