Running the width of Scotland for homelessness and mental health

Our Edinburgh office will be taking on the almighty task of running the width of Scotland for two worthy causes: homelessness and mental health.

At Buro Happold our day-to-day involves facilitating health and wellbeing through our building designs but we wanted to go that extra mile this spring. Our Edinburgh office are running the Lang Way Roon’ from Glasgow to Edinburgh – a distance of 100km – to raise money for two important causes affecting the construction industry today – homelessness, and health and wellbeing.

The Lang Way Roon’ event will involve determined Buro Happold employees running in relay teams from our impressive Glasgow project, The Riverside Museum, all the way to our newly completed project in Edinburgh, McEwan Hall.

On Saturday 12th May 2018, runners will enjoy the scenic route along the Forth and Clyde canal and Union canal. In teams, with a range of different capabilities, they will complete distances between one kilometre and 42 kilometres to contribute to the 100 kilometre route. All told, the amount of running will be a total of 400 kilometres.

“I was just into social running before and hadn’t done more than 5k. I have been training hard and pushing myself to run more for the Lang Way Roon’ but will all be well worth it!”
Dean Shanks, Finance Project Assistant.

New runners will be gearing up alongside our more experienced runners, some who will be dusting off their training shoes to complete their first full marathons on the route.

Two pregnant soon-to-be mums will be waddling the last few yards over the finish line whilst carrying the extra weight of their sizeable baby bumps to complete the route to McEwan Hall.

“On the date of the run, I have less than two weeks until my due date but am still determined to waddle over the finish line!”
Flora Fraser, Associate.

Health and wellbeing is something which affects us all and the growing recognition of the importance of good mental health and physical wellbeing is helping us to achieve success and happiness in our lives.

So as well as designing to mitigate, Buro Happold are challenging themselves to raise money for Health in Mind, a local charity, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing in Scotland. Health in Mind offer help and support to around 3,000 people per year in Edinburgh, the Lothians and across Scotland. All their fundraising goes towards delivering their vital mental health services.

Health in Mind provide talking therapies such as counselling, befriending services and information about what support is available. Health in Mind helps some of the most vulnerable people in our society such as survivors of abuse, ethnic minorities and older people to live the life they want to live.

Our second chosen charity, LandAid brings the property industry together, to provide safe, suitable and affordable accommodation for young people facing homelessness. Every day of every year, thousands of people find themselves homeless. Many are forced to sleep in overcrowded hostels, on sofas of people they barely know, or worse still, on the streets.

LandAid bring together remarkable businesses and individuals from across the property industry to support projects that provide life changing accommodation for young people facing homelessness to give them a positive future.

If you’d like to donate, and help Buro Happold do our bit to eradicate homelessness within the UK and enable everyone to live healthily and happily, then please donate to our Virgin Money Giving page.
