Our Young Engineers go to Berlin

12 of our young engineers travelled to Berlin with 12 young architects and landscape designers from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Grant Associates as part of their ongoing development.

The trip aimed to promote communication between the different groups, and teach them about the different language each uses so that they feel more comfortable discussing and critiquing ideas when working together on projects.

They were joined by several senior figures from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Buro Happold, who shared their expertise and experience with the group.

A packed weekend of exploration, insightful discussions, lectures, expansive city tours, an intense design ‘sprint’ and even dancing ‘til the early hours to heavy techno!

It was refreshing to see the enthusiasm of new colleagues and the shared aspirations for the socially driven, sustainable development of a city. A great opportunity to socialise and design with other young professionals from Buro Happold and Grant Associates, I look forward to future collaborations.

We split into three teams and explored the city, each with a different route planned through a different area of the city. Berlin worked very well as a host city because of its relatively recent history as a city heavily bombed during the war, and then divided in the years following. This means there are several distinct styles of architecture and masterplanning throughout the city which lent themselves way to interesting discussions.

The groups then worked together to apply their learning to a real-life project. A great time was had by all who attended!
