Developing a consistent approach to reducing the built environment’s carbon impact

Buildings and the construction industry are responsible for approximately 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Buro Happold is at the forefront of driving the net zero carbon agenda.

The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) is a pivotal initiative designed to address the pressing need for operational and upfront carbon reduction within the built environment sector. In this online briefing, we will explore the fundamental aspects of the UKNZCBS, its development, implications, and proactive measures for stakeholders.

Please join Buro Happold to learn what you can expect from the new UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.

Buro Happold partner Christine Lowry

Christine Lowry

MEng (Hons), CEng MSt (Cantab), MCIBSE

Partner | Buro Happold

Since joining Buro Happold in 2001, Christine has honed her expertise as a mechanical building services engineer. She has a demonstrable track record in leading the successful delivery of commercial, civic, cultural, educational and scientific buildings for both private and public sector clients across multiple disciplines.

Christine’s master’s in interdisciplinary design for the built environment, combined with her extensive experience, knowledge and hands-on approach has allowed her to deliver complex projects. These include commercial and residential mixed-use schemes, historic refurbishments, spaces with close environmental control such as galleries, exhibition spaces and archives, as well as quirky local schemes that spark engineering imagination and innovation.

Panellists

Natasha Watson, Senior Structural Engineer

Dr Natasha Watson

EngD, CEng, MICE

Associate | Embodied Carbon Lead | Buro Happold

After completing her doctorate in low-impact building materials in 2016, Natasha has become one of the experts leading the development of knowledge on the embodied impacts of construction materials within the construction industry as well as on Buro Happold projects.

In her role, Natasha is the UK Embodied Carbon Lead for Structures, and her goal is to develop and deliver our advisory and consultancy service in Embodied Carbon over and above Buro Happold’s own dedication to reducing embodied carbon as a company. This also includes upskilling her colleagues in their understanding of embodied carbon, primarily in its measurement and reduction.

As well as the technical aspects of tackling the climate emergency, she is interested in the wider issues around equity and unconscious bias in the built environment, as well as intersectional environmentalism.

Natasha is part of the Culture and Entertainment Sector Group for the upcoming UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, focusing on the embodied carbon aspects of reporting.
