A productive future for an evolving nation
With heavy industry within the country continuing to grow, India needs to prepare for a more prosperous future while also reducing its impact on the environment.
The German Corporation for International Development (GIZ) has appointed BuroHappold Engineering and the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) to provide technical consulting for the planning of new industrial parks and investment zones, with the aim of making the nation’s industrial and business districts greener. This includes the development of planning and design concepts for pilot cases as well as technical input for the preparation of a National Reference Document.
Our team has introduced, and is helping to develop, an Industrial Districts Certification System that is to be used as a framework for future developments. Unlike similar initiatives, the framework will not end with the completed certification of a district but will instead continue to look at its operation over a 50 year cycle. The developed system will reward a company or a district that clearly distinguishes itself from the market by not only saving energy and bettering its employees’ working conditions, but also – and most importantly – by actively engaging them in the design process.
Following a series of training sessions in India and considering the high industrial growth targets of the country, it is all the more important to develop the capacities of public and private agencies for undertaking systematic site masterplanning of industrial areas. This includes the development of training materials, integrating environmental aspects, climate change and resource efficiency. In order to support these requirements we are developing a standardised system of training, including the necessary materials, as well as an introduction into the market through the development of viable business models.
The project to develop a framework for new investment districts is not only designed to improve the green credentials of businesses in India, but also to enable business to grow. National and international consumers are increasingly requesting products that have been developed in an environmentally conscious way, using reasonable standards for employees and a transparent product lifecycle. Certified Green Industrial Districts will not only benefit the developers, industry owners and workers, but ultimately the consumer.
