Working towards a
more equitable built environment

For over 45 years, Buro Happold has been committed to designing and creating environments for the benefit of people, places and planet. As engineers, designers and advisers, we strive to improve our industry and ensure the projects we work on touch the earth lightly.

At Buro Happold, we focus on creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and included, regardless of their background and abilities. Taking inspiration from this year’s UIA World Congress of Architects motto “Leave No One Behind”, we’re exploring its significance for both our team members and our collective efforts.

Get to know Buro Happold consultants from across Europe, as they share their perspectives on what “Leave No One Behind” means in their fields of expertise and join us in making a difference.

We asked our colleagues from across our Europe offices…

How can we contribute to more sustainable futures?

Listen to Niels Elliot Brochner, our country director in Denmark, and Quirine Henry, sustainability engineer in Rotterdam, who explain our goal to not only to leave no one behind, but also to leave the environment better off than before.

Leaving no one behind is doing all we can to share our engineering knowledge with those who will benefit from it. Here is what Jan Cieśla, inclusive design specialist in Warsaw, and Olivia Hughes, structural engineer in Rotterdam, have to say.

Sidsel Birk Hjuler, active mobility global lead, and Xavier Crolla, our partner at our Rotterdam office provide more insights on our commitment to to enhance the liveability and appeal of public spaces and leaving no one behind.

In our multidisciplinary team, we combine our knowledge through interdepartmental collaboration. To understand how, we hear from Jette Sell from the HR department and Marc Hense, vertical transportation team leader.

At Buro Happold our task is to ensure that all employees feel integrated as part of the team and to prevent exclusion. Mie Jessen, group coordinator and Joanne Jimmink, senior structural engineer, share how they ensure that no one is left behind.

When we strive to ensure inclusivity for all, it is essential to consider future generations. Marcus Bonlykke, electrical intern in Copenhagen, and Paula Longato, Europe lighting team lead talk about embracing a multi-generational approach.

Sometimes all it takes to acquire valuable data or generate innovative ideas is to be open to others. For Sabrina Autrata, HR advisor and Martin Henriksen, computational design lead it is crucial that everyone can express themselves.

By prioritising sustainable choices, we can contribute to a better future for our planet says Vera Sluijter, graduate structural engineer. Vanessa Tischer explains how our HR team creates a supportive culture that embraces diversity.

Nowzar Hedayati, senior structural technician, and Mirette Khorshed, sustainability consultant in Warsaw talk about creating urban environments that truly benefit their inhabitants and how that can be achieved.
