Matteo, a Conservation Accredited Engineer and Julian, Director of Structures will talk you through the definitions and principles of conservation for built heritage from a facade and structure perspective: historic materials, typical defects and repair options in line with internationally recognised methods and best practice.

Matteo Francini

MEng CEng MICE APAEWE Accredited Conservation Engineer

Matteo is one of the 68 structural engineers in the whole of the UK who have achieved the CARE membership with the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers (Conservation Accreditation Register for Engineers), a testament of 20 years of experience working in the conservation of historic buildings and sites.

He is an Associate in BuroHappold’s facade engineering team where he is part of the diagnostic, inspection and remediation consultancy services for historic and listed as well as modern and newly-built facades.

His experience ranges from 2000+ years old Roman buildings to modern steel and reinforced concrete structures.  His approach includes a thorough desktop study of the building, its history and past alterations; hands-on investigations to inform the condition of the existing fabric and design of sympathetic repair works in accordance with internationally recognised conservation principles.

As part of his role in the facade group, Matteo informs and supervises enabling work contractors in facade retention schemes.

Julian McFarland

BEng CEng MIStructE MSc DIC

Julian is a Director in the London Structures team where he leads numerous projects across all sectors but one of his main areas of interest is the refurbishment of existing structures.

Julian graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1997 with a degree in Architectural Engineering before completing an MSc in Structural Steel Design at Imperial College London. He has over 19 years of experience as a structural engineer, 15 of which are as a chartered engineer.  

Julian has worked on numerous projects including buildings in steelwork, concrete and refurbishment of existing structures.  He has experience working on projects in the following sectors; hospitality, residential, commercial office, government buildings, retail and deep basements in addition to international experience in Poland and Russia.
