Alan Travers

Head of Rivers & Coastal Engineering

A Technical Director with over 30 years’ experience, Alan joined Buro Happold in 2001 and has since been made a partner in the firm. Having spent nearly his entire career involved in water resources management, river and coastal engineering, and investigating flood risks and drainage issues, he’s renowned as a leading expert in this sector. 

As director for our Water sector, Alan’s invaluable experience plays a major influence on our broad portfolio of water-based projects. Having worked on such iconic ventures as the London 2012 Olympic Masterplan, where he led the Waterways and Flood Risk Team, the regeneration of the Aga Khan Award winning Wadi Hanifah in Riyadh, and Hayle Harbour Regeneration in Cornwall, his substantial knowledge of this arena is fundamental to our work.

With a history of working for both public and private sector clients, Alan takes the lead of our multi-disciplinary teams on water related projects. This level of experience has also led to his appointment as expert witness for a number of planning and legal cases.
