Buro Happold engineering wins design competition for triennial design museum in Milan

Buro Happold and Italian architects, OBR, have won the design competition for a new restaurant on the terrace of the Triennale di Milano.

The Triennale di Milano is restoring its panoramic terrace to offer the public a new quality catering facility in the frame of the Parco Sempione, with a unique view of the Milan landscape. The restaurant will be located on the roof top of the Palazzo dell’arte bringing to life the 1930’s structure.

The design concept includes a panoramic restaurant overlooking the impressive skyline of Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione, with the structure surrounded by an aromatic garden. Protected by a floating tent, the pavilion acts as a bio-climatic greenhouse and adapts to different self- thermal regulation scenarios during night, day, summer and winter.

Buro Happold designed a light structure that supports a fully glazed sustainable restaurant. The movable external canopy, utilises natural ventilation during mid-season and high performance glazing during the winter period. Underfloor fan coil units provide a fresh air supply ensuring maximum comfort for the occupants.

The stunning panoramic restaurant will also offer exceptional views of the Triennale Expo 2015  on the theme of feeding the planet; energy for life, championing Milan’s identity and acting as a symbolic gateway to the world one year prior to the Expo opening.

The temporary project will last four years and is scheduled to open Spring 2015.
