Sports arenas and entertainment venues should be icons that inspire, excite and set the stage for success – be it athletic or economic, cultural or commercial
(our brochures are best viewed in Adobe Acrobat)
Our venues lie at the heart of successful businesses by delivering events that people won’t forget. Shouldn’t your project work for every stakeholder – fans, performers, players, operators and owners?
Raising the game in stadia and venue design to grow income
Beyond the fan experience, we focus on commercial outcomes and opportunities. For example, can the functionality of a stadium be flexible, to be used for more than one code? In one, we have designed a pitch which slides out of the way to reveal the pitch for another code entirely. This offers the opportunity for another income stream.
Or consider how in the Olympic Stadium transformation (OST2), the remarkable new roof, combined with variable seating configurations provides an inspirational backdrop for memorable sporting moments and rock concerts (OS, London East regeneration, Olympicopolis).

Meet the team
Our sports and entertainment leadership team have global experience designing and engineering world class sports stadia, entertainment venues and much more, to deliver exceptional fan experience and improved revenues.
To help inform the venue design of the future, we have undertaken our own world-leading research and developed a unique way to measure atmosphere and the fan experience within stadia. The whole experience of the fans is inextricably linked to performance on the pitch and the commercial success of the event.
Can the concourses and surrounding venue environment be designed to encourage fans to ‘dwell’ pre and post-match, offering greater financial yield and enhancing the experience of the visit? Is there a better way to incorporate retail and refreshment and revenue opportunities (People Flow, ‘eye-ball’ analysis of billboards from passing spectators)?
And spectators should enjoy the approach to the venue, the comfort of the seating, the view, the atmosphere, and finally a safe departure afterward.
In engineering terms we focus on the building itself – from the integrity and efficiency of the construction to its ongoing sustainability, be that environmental or economic.
You can trust our impressive track record
We were involved in creating a soccer stadium that is one of Europe’s most commercially successful, and has one of the best playing surfaces in the world. (Arsenal) We physically raised the roof of the world’s biggest grossing arena (O2 Arena), inside the Millennium Dome, an earlier project of ours. In fact, BuroHappold has driven some of the world’s most iconic projects in the sector. The Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta, with a mechanical roof that opens and closes like a camera lens, became commercially successful before it even officially opened due to pre-bookings.
Looking wider than the stadium
We are ideally placed to understand the context of venues within mixed use masterplans. Here they are integral to the wellbeing and engagement of the local community, and at the core of the economic development and regeneration of our clients’ assets and cities. See Olympicopolis.
