Buildings and the construction industry are responsible for approximately 40% of the planet’s energy-related carbon emissions. This simply cannot continue.

Buro Happold is at the forefront of driving the net zero carbon agenda. Committed to developing and sharing knowledge of this critical issue across engineering and construction, we were among the first signatories to the World Green Building Council Net Zero Carbon Buildings Declaration. Moreover, Buro Happold has a seat on the steering group for the UK Green Building Council net zero carbon buildings framework definition task group.

In addition to publishing our own Climate Emergency Action Plan, last year we initiated the ‘Engineers Declare’ movement to galvanise the broader professional community in tackling the climate and biodiversity agendas.

As stated in our Global Sustainability Report, Buro Happold has set three clear net zero carbon targets: for our own operations by April 2021, in operation for all our new build projects by 2030 and for all projects by 2050. We understand not only what it takes, but also how existentially crucial it is, for us and our clients to meet these ambitious goals together.

City authorities

Our sustainability and carbon management experts enable city leaders to navigate the complex challenges posed by the creation and delivery of action plans.

Helping clients the world over, we participated in devising New York City’s innovative 80 x 50 plan and have assisted the Greater London Authority in developing post-occupancy evaluation studies and tall building assessments for the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation. Buro Happold also contributes to the C40 Cities initiative in an advisory capacity.
