Advancing an academy
The historic Phillips Academy Campus is the country’s oldest high school, and one of the premier college preparatory schools.
Originally founded as two separate campuses, the grounds were combined into one as the school began to grow. This has led to the need to develop an innovative campus masterplan that will improve access across the whole school, creating a stronger sense of place with a greater relationship with the surrounding environment.
BuroHappold Engineering is working as part of a team of specialist consultants to deliver a new masterplan for the school. Our priority is to develop a plan that focuses on landscape design and transportation connectivity, combining them with the overall plan for the site. A guiding principle for the design is that the school’s history will be retained while the masterplan forms the focal point for key decisions about the school’s future.
We are also working to incorporate sustainable strategies throughout the planning process, ensuring best practices are followed both for potentially expanding the campus and for the reuse and retainment of the historic building stock. The sustainable element includes the incorporation of utility and service systems into both the new and existing buildings, offering solutions that enhance the school’s energy efficiency. The environmentally sensitive approach to the campus also provides a learning opportunity for students.
The masterplan has been informed by close coordination between teams working on the project, the school, and its students, with the aim of maintaining the key themes identified for the campus, including connectivity and architectural fabric.
Once complete, the Phillips Academy Campus will offer students a highly accessible and sustainable educational space, while retaining the history that has enabled it to become one of the most well respected schools in North America.
