A stately icon with efficiency at its heart
Dating back to 1984, the iconic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters (MoFA) in Riyadh was designed to reflect traditional Middle Eastern architecture.
The building’s external facade is designed to be conservative, in contrast to the luxurious interior.
The building’s striking interior has become in need of refurbishment and upgrading to create spaces that will see MoFA though the next 30 years of its life. BuroHappold Engineering is working with Henning Larson, the architect who worked on the original project 30 years ago, to restore it to its original splendour while modernising the building services systems.
Our work to modernise the building operations will reduce energy consumption and running costs by replacing the original plant with new modern energy efficient components. Our team modified the plant’s indoor cooling terminals to provide electronically communicated motors. Supporting the ambition to create a building that promotes renewable energy use, our team has installed photovoltaics for electricity generation.
The life cycle of the new systems was a key consideration, so our team focused on incorporating durability, resilience and flexibility. We have incorporated control technology to improve energy efficiency and operational effectiveness, while providing a building management system to allow occupants to understand the systems and maximise their potential.
The flexibility of the services strategy allows for rearrangement of the space, helping to future proof the building to accommodate partition relocations and varying occupancy numbers. Our approach to the systems design allows for phasing of the refurbishment process, which will help reduce disruption to MoFA’s operations during the works.
Due for completion in April 2017, the newly invigorated building will feature upgraded and repositioned workspaces that fit the needs of a contemporary Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh. Our work remains sympathetic to the architectural design that won the building an Aga Khan Award for Architecture while modernising the spaces for a more sustainable future.
