Sustainable solutions that squash the competition
Our client, Middlebury College, was looking to replace its existing five squash courts with a state of the art squash center in line with the specifications of the World Squash Federation.
The new center boasts nine courts, its own fitness room, and a central viewing area capable of accommodating hundreds of spectators.
Middlebury College had an existing reputation as a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability, so these values were key to the design and construction of this new sports facility. One of our client’s main aims was for the center to achieve LEED Gold accreditation.
To meet these specific requirements, BuroHappold Engineering incorporated a wide spectrum of low energy and highly efficient features into both the structural and MEP design of the facility. Central to these is the huge skylight that crowns the central viewing area, allowing natural light to flood the building and providing enough illumination during the day to eliminate the need for additional electric lighting.
We incorporated a solar array and biomass plant within our MEP design, which equipped the center with its own renewable energy sources, as well as a highly efficient ventilation system. The energy use of the facility is also monitored so that any inefficiency can be quickly detected and rectified.
Even the materials used in the new building are environmentally sound, with all concrete and steel coming from within a 500 mile radius of Middlebury College, and wood sourced only from responsibly managed forests. In addition, 97% of construction waste was diverted away from landfill.
The integrated structural and MEP engineering solutions provided by our engineers, as well as our thoughtful and environmentally conscious working practices, were vital to realizing an efficient, sustainable sports facility. And the results speak for themselves, exceeding our client’s expectations and achieving LEED Platinum certification.
