Dr Jan Cieśla

Jan re-joined Buro Happold in 2023 as an associate director in our Warsaw office, leading the Inclusive Design team. He has more than 15 years of experience in design consultancy, providing expert advice for demanding projects on a single building as well as urban scale.

Jan specialises in accessibility, well-being and inclusive design and is a seasoned expert in building certification schemes, such as WELL and BREEAM. He has led the first WELL certification in Poland and contributed to the sustainable character of numerous other designs, including Q22.

Jan successfully combines his academic background with practical skills. As a WELL Accredited Professional and site supervisor, he has significantly contributed to the delivery of Buro Happold’s healthy office in Warsaw and the refurbishment of our office in Berlin. In 2019, Jan was honoured with an award by the International Wellbeing Institute (IWBI) and soon after became a member of IWBI’s Task Force on COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Infections.

During a period of independent expert activity, Jan developed expertise in universal design and accessibility, especially in an age-friendly build environment. He enjoys working in international multidisciplinary project teams.

Jan holds a PhD in architecture and is a graduate of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the field of management in construction.
