Ben is the Discipline Leader for UK Acoustics, leading a team of specialists in design and control of noise and vibration for architecture.
His team of international experts are focused entirely on the acoustic performance of buildings, and are passionate about working with clients to provide engineering solutions to outcome-focussed aspirations.
Ben initially specialised in electro-acoustics as part of his bachelor’s degree. Post-university, his primary employment was trade based, giving him the first-hand experience of new build architecture and construction processes that facilitates his practical approach to engineering consultancy. Prior to joining Buro Happold in 2015, Ben was leading a team at another multi-national consultancy, reinforcing the implementation of real-world solutions that has proven so beneficial.
Since his practical beginnings, Ben has conducted research on sound insulation, structural vibration isolation, and the acoustic performance of ventilation systems; presenting his findings at industry conferences. He has a particular interest in very high-performance sound insulation design, and has leveraged this knowledge to provide specialist engineering consultancy on a number of unique schemes involving performance spaces, music, or high dynamic live load activity.
Ben is a multiple-time contributor to Architecture Today and a number of STEM outreach programmes aimed at enthusing young people about engineering. He sits on the Institute of Acoustics’ Building Acoustics Council, providing input and guidance on issues relating to architectural acoustics in the UK. Ben is also a guest lecturer for architecture students at the Royal College of Art.
