National 9/11 Memorial Museum Pavilion wins for outstanding structure

The National September 11th Memorial Museum Pavilion was one of 100 outstanding structures and built environments in New York City to receive an award for Built by Women (BxW NYC), sponsored by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.

Buro Happold partner Erleen Hatfield led the structural engineering design for the project along with senior design architect and project manager Anne Lewison of Snøhetta.

The 47,600ft² building located in downtown Manhattan is expected to welcome more than five million visitors annually as they descend into the subterranean galleries of the museum. The project offered Buro Happold the opportunity of working on a unique Snøhetta design, which utilized over 1,100 tons of structural steel and posed unprecedented challenges through its limited structural support, complex geometry, constraints on all sides and tight security requirements.

On February 26th, the Beverly Willis Foundation will recognize firms and individuals supporting and advancing women in the building professions as well as honor the legacy of Beverly Willis.
