Four Exciting Engineering Projects Opening in the Year of the Dog

As Buro Happold continues to carve out a reputation for delivering bold and daring engineering projects across the globe, we look forward to the opening of four significant projects in Asia this Year of the Dog.

A unique blend of culture and commerce, history and innovation, Asia offers a varied and dynamic market that truly challenges the creativity of our engineers.

With offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, we are well-placed to tackle some of the most exciting and complex projects in the region. To date, we have worked with leading clients to deliver buildings that inspire and delight, including landmarks like the Philippines Arena in Manila, Kunming Xishan Wanda Plaza in China, and the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong.

As we push forward with our pioneering use of technology to augment our practice, we look set to deliver our most spectacular projects yet in 2018. Combining striking architecture, sleek engineering and a sustainable approach to design, these landmark buildings will improve the built environment for people and planet.

Xiqu Centre
West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong

The sinuous curves of the Xiqu Centre’s iconic facade draw apart like curtains to reveal an inviting cultural sanctuary that blends theatre, art and the public realm. Suspended above the public ground floor, the main 1,100 seat auditorium is isolated from vibration to achieve the exceptional acoustic quality required for a world class performance space. Our experts collaborated with the wider design team to deliver the entire project in a digital BIM environment. This enabled us to resolve and coordinate every aspect of the building design to deliver dynamic spaces that can adapt to host a range of international arts programmes.

The Jewel
Changi Airport, Singapore

The Jewel at Changi Airport elevates the passenger experience by reaching beyond the realm of aviation to unite Singapore’s international airport with city life beyond. We created the signature roof – a glittering glass dome that represents a masterstroke of engineering, comprising a contiguous steel and glass gridshell that spans 200m x 150m and weighs 4,000 tonnes. Beneath this landmark canopy bespoke aviation facilities combine with luxury retail outlets and unique attractions, such as the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, to create a compelling lifestyle destination for travellers and residents alike.

Morpheus
City of Dreams, Macau SAR

Dramatic and sculptural in its appearance, the monolithic Morpheus tower forges a distinctive identity for China’s latest international leisure and entertainment destination. A trans-continental team from our London and Hong Kong offices worked together to develop bespoke software that enabled us to create one of the most challenging large-scale steelwork structures of its kind. We used cutting-edge parametric design techniques throughout, from initial concept development through to the design of the 2,500 unique exoskeleton connections, to realise a project that represents true excellence in facade design and engineering.

The World Towers,
Mumbai

Rising 420m above the city, The World Towers will redefine the Mumbai skyline and claim the title of tallest residential building in the world. Record-breaking dimensions are not the only impressive element of this project, however, as the tower is designed to be as efficient on the inside as it is beautiful on the outside. Our team worked alongside local experts to develop pioneering low energy building services strategies, which include 100% waste water treatment and recycling, solar water heating and a gravity fed water supply system. Daring by design, The World Towers will stand as a proud symbol of Mumbai’s progressive and ambitious outlook.
