BuroHappold wins two BCSA Structural Steel Design Awards
There was sporting success for BuroHappold’s re-engineering of the Manchester Etihad and London Olympic Stadia at the BCSA Structural Steel Design Awards 2016, with both projects picking up major awards against stiff competition.
The elegant and fantastically efficient roof structures at these venues were celebrated by the judges and end user clients alike, with both including gravity-defying lightweight solutions that retained and enhanced the visual legacy of the existing venues.

The configuration of the Olympic Stadium bowl was significantly amended to enable the venue to host an unrivalled array of sporting and entertainment events, with the new roof that was required becoming the largest free-spanning open stadium roof in the world.
The Etihad Stadium was expanded to enhance the experience of the venue and create a vibrant new South Stand, requiring the new roof which was integrated within the existing fabric of the structure.
In repurposing both venues to suit their new sporting and business needs, the new roof structures had to be supported off existing structures that had not originally been designed for these extensions – and in both circumstances the new integrated with the existing and enhanced elements seamlessly, and with the minimum of intervention and disruption.
The geometry and behaviour of the original structure were very complex but, with extremely detailed study and fine engineering skill, most of the original elements have been re-incorporated.
Judge comments – Olympic stadium conversion
A significant challenge for both venues was that they had to host world class sporting events such as Premier League Football, Diamond League Athletics and the Rugby World Cup during the construction. This need for business continuity was enabled and indeed celebrated by the sophisticated engineering that was adopted for both roofs – integrating construction and design seamlessly into a total solution that was unique for each venue.
