BuroHappold wins “tour de cedres” residential tower design competition
BuroHappold, together with Stefano Boeri Architetti, has won the design competition for the Residential Tower “Tour de Cedres” in Lausanne, Switzerland.
At 117 meters tall, the new tower is conceived as a vertical forest with terraces and loggias and hosts more than 100 cedar trees together with shrubs and plants for an overall area of 3000m2 of greenery. The scheme is completed by a 5000m2 retail centre.
The tower which will have to meet the strict energy requirements of the Swiss Minergie standard, will be designed for optimal lighting, shading and thermal performance. As well as making extensive use of renewable technologies including photovoltaics, ground source heat pumps and rainwater collection. The external loggias and planters for the vertical forest are being developed as a modular prefabricated elements, connected to the reinforced concrete frame of the tower.
BuroHappold will work along with Boeri, providing all the engineering services on the creation of an inspirational project that pushes the boundaries of vertical living to achieve the best possible balance between human wellbeing, environmental performance and architectural expression.
