BuroHappold wins 2015 TEKLA North America BIM award
BuroHappold Engineering is a 2015 North America BIM award winner under the Commercial Category for The Tower at PNC Plaza, a corporate headquarters building located in Pittsburgh, PA that opened October 1.
Rising 33 stories, the Tower is an 800,000SF building designed to exceed LEED Platinum certification and be the greenest office tower in the world. BuroHappold – providing integrated structural and MEP engineering, daylight consulting and energy modeling services – worked closely with Gensler and the wider design team to realize this ambitious and innovative Tower.
BuroHappold was selected as the 2015 Tekla winner by a jury of leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) experts because of our use of BIM software, especially TEKLA. From the early stages of design through construction, using this software allowed all parties to leverage the benefits of BIM and deliver a high-quality product to the owner. For example, the project team utilized a TEKLA model to detail, review, and coordinate over 8,000 tons of structural steel. To expedite the schedule, the team provided a 3D Steel Fabrication mill order model to the contractors for bidding that allowed for a higher degree of accuracy in steel estimates and gave the client a quicker and more competitive bidding process. This 3D model helped to eliminate duplicative modeling and allowed the steel contractor to begin detailing steel earlier, saving time.
