On June 18th, Buro Happold lighting designers Gabe Guilliams, Associate Principal, and Pei-Chun Yang, Senior Lighting Designer, took home a 2015 Lumen Award for their work on Columbia University’s Brown Institute for Media Innovation.

The Lumen Awards jury said, “We loved the execution of this project and integration of lighting layers with the ceiling and walls to achieve the multi-use functionality.”

The Illuminating Engineering Society New York City Section recognized 10 award winning lighting design teams for their professionalism, excellence and originality in lighting design during the 2015 Lumen Awards at the 47th annual Lumen Gala, of which Buro Happold received an Award of Citation for Strong Execution of Concept.

The 4,600ft2 media lab, located in the historic School of Journalism building at Columbia University, is an academic experiment devoted to the co-evolution of technology and storytelling. A series of intertwining luminous elements builds a network of ambient light to support the Institute’s varied programmatic needs – including faculty offices, meeting rooms and work areas to accommodate technologically focused course work.

The Institute opened in 2014 and was designed by LTL Architects.
