BuroHappold introduce Frei Otto: Spanning the Future premier in Asia
Nick Greenwood, Partner and Asia Regional Director at BuroHappold, will introduce the premier screening in Asia of Spanning the Future.
This documentary celebrates the life and work of Frei Otto, one of the 20th century’s most influential architects. The event is being jointly held by AIA Hong Kong, BuroHappold Engineering and RIBA Hong Kong.
As both an architect and engineer, Frei Otto was widely recognised for his original thinking and highly sought after projects, defined by their complex architectural and structural challenges. He was a pioneer in the field of lightweight structures, and instrumental in helping BuroHappold win its first ‘proper job’ in 1976.
He was one of the most outstanding, creative minds working in our field in the past hundred years.
Mike Cook, BuroHappold Chairman
‘He was one of the most outstanding, creative minds working in our field in the past hundred years,’ says BuroHappold Chairman, Mike Cook. ‘Bridging the worlds of architect and engineer, he defined a new way of creating space underpinned by the belief that natural forms give us the best answers.’
Frei Otto was a utopian who never stopped believing that architecture can make a better world for us all. He practiced a holistic and collaborative approach, working with environmentalists, biologists, engineers, philosophers, historians, naturalists, and other architects.
Along with Buckminster ‘Bucky’ Fuller, Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, Frei Otto was a visionary whose approach to form finding is the foundation for modern architecture.
The screening takes place on Wednesday 21 September, from 6.30-9pm, at JLL’s Hong Kong office, and is free to members. Simon Chiu, the executive producer, will be attending to answer any questions.
