BuroHappold acknowledged as global leader in sustainable design
BuroHappold Engineering is excited to be part of the design team acknowledged as a global leader in the development of sustainable and resilient solutions for our work on Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, MA. This nine story, 262,000ft² building designed by Perkins+Will reflects recent advances in computational modelling which are transforming the design process.
As the project’s environmental performance modeling consultant, BuroHappold provided advanced life cycle cost and building performance analyses critical to meeting key client goals for optimizing patient comfort and safety, as well as integrating resiliency planning strategies and ongoing sustainability. Located on the waterfront the building’s design takes advantage of natural light while also incorporating resiliency planning strategies to ensure the hospital can continue to operate in the event of a disaster. Dynamic thermal modeling helped the design team to analyze natural ventilation strategies which were crucial to both day to day building performance and indoor air quality as well as post disaster operations.
BuroHappold and the design team were recognized by the 2015 SUSTAINIA 100, an annual guide that identifies projects, initiatives and technologies at the forefront of sustainability innovation. The top 100 sustainability solutions were found after reviewing more than 1500 projects and businesses on six continents.
