Kuala Lumpur CAV design sprint

Our Kuala Lumpur Design Sprint is the first of our Global Design Sprints in an Asian city. It was organised and hosted in co-operation with our partners at Woods Bagot and brought together approximately 20 sprinters.

Kuala Lumpur is the centre of our Cities work in South East Asia. Being the first Asian city where a Design Sprint took place, it was an extremely interesting place for us to gather further insight. The Design Sprint in KL was organised in cooperation with our partners from Woods Bagot and was attended by a group of 20 urban planners, architects, engineers, academics and government officials representing a broad range of stakeholders.

A number of key topics emerged from the discussions, highlighting characteristics that will be influencing the future of connected and autonomous vehicles in the city. As an example, CAVs will have to share the roads with motorbikes, often working their way through traffic without adhering to traffic rules. This causes a very relevant safety concern in Malaysia and many other Asian cities, places where the testing of CAVs and specific regulations are not in place today.

At Buro Happold we are keen to work together with our partners to better understand the future of CAVs from all perspectives. As we move forward to a wider availability of this new technology, we hope that cities will be able to learn from one another to identify the best solutions for their citizens.
