Expanding our presence in Southern India

Buro Happold is expanding its physical presence into southern India with the opening of a new office to support major engineering projects in the region

With an increasing number of high-profile projects in the southern Indian region, Buro Happold has opened an office in Hyderabad to facilitate and manage this huge body of work. One of these projects is the single largest commercial development that Buro Happold has ever been involved in, as well as the biggest in India.

This commercial development consists of approximately 41.2 million square feet of development. This large-scale masterplan and mixed-use project will occupy 68.5 acres, made up of “Grade A” commercial shell and core office development, as well as high-end residential, luxury hotels, convention centres and retail areas with associated parking. Buro Happold engineers based in Hyderabad will be working with an international architectural firm to provide MEP, health wellbeing and productivity services, as well as site-wide infrastructure services covering traffic, parking and pedestrian design.

Another key southern India project is a joint initiative from two of the largest developers of South India. This group of 22-storey Grade A office towers contains 8 million square feet of development spread over 24 acres. We are providing MEP and infrastructure services with flood assessment to the project. This is Buro Happold’s fourth collaboration in India with SOM architects.

Buro Happold are also working on a high-density residential development targeting the affordable housing segment, made up of 1800 units, with a total built up area of 1.73 million square feet, spread across 13.8 acres. More than 60% of the plot retains the existing trees to comply with LEED Green Building certification.

Opening an office in Hyderabad makes perfect business sense for Buro Happold, as explained by our managing director for the region:
“This is a key strategic move for Buro Happold and will allow us to expand and deepen our offering in the area,” Krishnendu Mukherjee, managing director said. “I am delighted to be given the chance to extend our reach in Southern India. Hyderabad is a major technology centre, and Microsoft and Google both have their headquarters here. Our engineers and consultants work with the very latest tools and software and with our new base, we will be able to take full advantage of the latest technologies to increase efficiencies and raise standards. In accordance with our 4N Strategy – New clients, New geographies, New sectors, Non-residential – four key pillars of Buro Happold’s three-year India strategy, and four core reasons the firm has opened a new office in Hyderabad, South India.”

The Hyderabad office will employ up to 30 people and is in the Gachibowli area of the city. Hyderabad is the capital of India’s Telangana State, and of key strategic importance in the region. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are “twin cities” near Hussain Sagar Lake, but both have grown so large that they are now seen as one city.
