Engineers declare climate emergency

In a significant moment for the UK construction industry, websites enabling structural, civil and building services engineering firms to sign up to an online climate emergency declaration are launched.

In light of the recent ‘Architects Declare’ campaign, the industry is pledging to set new priorities and develop better ways of working.

Alongside institutions and academia, our industry must work together more closely by sharing information and best practice; together agreeing to drive rapidly towards zero carbon construction in support of the UK Government’s declared aim.

We have to set the pace of change and support the government and our clients in taking the steps to mitigate the climate change and biodiversity emergency.

The first professional declaration was created by 17 Stirling Prize winning architects at www.architectsdeclare.com. As engineers we have soon followed to create allied sites.

Structural engineering firms are now able to sign up to a climate emergency declaration on www.structuralengineersdeclare.com, a site created with the support of the Happold Foundation. This can also be found via the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Buildings Services Engineers can sign via www.buildingservicesengineersdeclare.com and Civil Engineers will soon be able to do the same at www.civilengineersdeclare.com.

There is no doubt that we have passed the point where we can afford to sit on the fence and wait for others. We have to set the pace of change and support the government and our clients in taking the steps to mitigate the climate change and biodiversity emergency that is plain for everyone to see.

I am proud to see that engineers are moving with determination and confidence to take seriously their responsibility for the planet and the people who inhabit it.
