Buro Happold shortlisted for six 2019 CIBSE awards

Specialist teams across practice are celebrating after being shortlisted for six CIBSE Building Performance Awards, with prominent projects from the UK and US recognised by the industry body.

Buro Happold has been shortlisted in every CIBSE category that it entered, including Building Performance Consultancy of the Year. The awards recognise the people, products and projects that demonstrate engineering excellence in the built environment. They are highly regarded by the industry as they are the only awards that focus on actual, measured performance, not just design intent or performance specifications. A year’s worth of energy data must be provided to enter, in order to validate any claims made. Here’s our Buro Happold shortlist:

Building Performance Engineer: Mark Dowson

A chartered Engineer in the London Sustainability team, Mark is ‘really happy’ to have been shortlisted. Carol Lelliott from Nicholas Hare Architects LLP worked with Mark on the David Attenborough Building and said, ‘Mark’s energy in pushing the boundaries and raising ambition were pivotal in achieving the measurable benefits that are continuing to excite our user clients. He is always up for any challenge you can throw at him and thrives on thinking through innovative ways of responding. He is a very special engineer and, if that is not enough, great fun to work with!’ We wish Mark every success.

Mark has been an inspiring mentor, someone who shares and incentivises, always looking to bring out the best in his team members. He is thorough in his projects, making sure every detail is thought of. Mark is an engineer with a truly holistic view who continually contributes to the development of new energy-efficient solutions.

Building Performance Consultancy (over 1000 employees): Buro Happold

This category recognises consultancies that are meeting and exceeding clients’ expectations of building performance and are actively spreading knowledge and best practice of building performance. Buro Happold do this in a myriad of ways, from using bespoke tools to develop our designs alongside clients, to running events that share our best initiatives with the industry, to creating buildings and cities that exceed all expectations for the client.

Collaborative Working Partnership and Project of the Year – Public Use: Urban Sciences Building, Newcastle University – Buro Happold

The USB has been shortlisted for two CIBSE awards. The £58million Urban Sciences Building (USB) at Newcastle University opened in summer 2017 and is the new home of one of the world’s leading schools of computing alongside a series of innovative research labs to inform urban infrastructure, industry and policy. The concept design for the USB was led by Hawkins\Brown Architects and ourselves, working with an academic and estates led stakeholder group at Newcastle University. One of the key project drivers was to create a university-owned building, rather than faculty-owned. As such, public engagement, openness, flexibility and adaptability were key elements of the brief, ensuring the building can be used and adapted in the future for different user groups.

Project of the Year – International: UC Santa Barbara, California, USA – Buro Happold and International: Hillman Hall, Missouri, USA – Buro Happold

Two of our projects made it into the Project of the Year in the International category. UC Santa Barbara San Joaquin Villages in California is a prime example of good community design that encourages connectivity. The 95,000ft2 of three-bedroom apartments consist of two to three storeys, and are connected by external circulation and community spaces to encourage interaction throughout the day. A 25,000ft2 dining room serves the entire student population of the broader San Joaquin housing complex.

BuroHappold’s other nominee is Hillman Hall, Missouri, a project that provided Washington University in St. Louis with the opportunity to design and construct a new building to house the Brown School of Social Work, allowing the institution to fully realize its vision of creating positive social change. A project with the highest levels of environmental and social responsibility, Buro Happold introduced the Living Building Challenge (LBC) framework to enable us to track and align these goals throughout our work. The project has achieved LEED Platinum certification.

The winners of the Awards will be announced on the 12th February 2019.
