Buro Happold shortlisted for 6 CIBSE Building Performance Awards

Buro Happold has been shortlisted in six CIBSE Building Performance Awards categories, with projects from the UK, US and Poland. As well as the prestigious Consultancy of the Year 2018

The awards recognise the people, products and projects that demonstrate engineering excellence in the built environment. They are the only dedicated industry awards that focus on actual, measured performance, not solely design intent or performance specifications. To enter you need to provide at least a year’s worth of energy data to validate your claims.

Buro Happold is proud to have been shortlisted in the Building Performance Consultancy of the Year (1000+) catagory. Our nomination highlights the capabilities of the practice as well as our ongoing mission to deliver exceptional building performance for every project we work on. Striving for measurable results, whilst ultimately increasing reliability, performance, and the value of buildings.

I’m so pleased we have managed to get onto the shortlist in so many categories. We set ourselves a challenge to get the data, and then to develop compelling entries which would get us noticed. This is very important to us to drive building performance both internally, and to share stories of what can be achieved collectively in our industry, to help reduce the carbon emissions from buildings without compromising on user satisfaction.

Delivering first class building performance for universities

The already multi-award winning David Attenborough Building Refurbishment, University Of Cambridge is shortlisted in two categories, the Collaborative Working Partnership and Commercial / Industrial Project of the Year. The refurbishment project delivered a 40% reduction in operational carbon emissions. Our team worked closely with stakeholders to develop a framework that not only informed the development of the design, but continued through to the operation of the building. The building will be occupied by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, who were able to help us tailor the building to meet their sustainable objectives. Building Performance has to come from both technical design excellence, but also a true understanding of how the users want the building to operate. From passive and low energy design strategies focused on the use of natural ventilation, to highly efficiency lighting our solutions, have significantly reduced running costs.

Another higher education project, the University of York Environment Building, has been shortlisted for Public Use Project of the Year. We helped deliver a BREEAM Excellent rated 4,000m2 office, laboratory and teaching space in a the facility reflects the world class research that takes place within its walls, and exceeds CIBSE Good Practice benchmarks for an energy intensive laboratory building. Reflecting our international scope, our team of US building services (MEP) engineers have also been shortlisted in the international project category for UCLA Engineering VI – Phase I (WIN-GEM), California, USA. This is a very similar building, to the York Environment Building, but responding to a different set of environmental and programme challenges, to give similar but locally adapted designs.

Practicing the building performance we preach

We believe in the low carbon, high health and wellbeing approach that can be delivered with careful attention as designers with significantly benefits for clients. This is why we are particularly proud that our own office in Warsaw has been shortlisted in the international category. We reduced carbon by taking a space in a refurbishment we have designed, using recycled materials, and other capital carbon reductions. Further attention to detail includes adopting the latest technology from collaborating with manufacturers, making our office a live test bed, and also a very intuitive user friendly BMS, that enables real time optimisation of the building for occupants. It was recently visited by the President of the WELL standard who said:

At the forefront of innovation

We enjoy working in the education sector, both designing buildings, and through our programme sponsoring EngD Students, which gives us valuable connections to the research establishment, bringing in the latest fresh ideas to apply to our work. Our nomination in the Energy Efficient Innovation category for NewMass was the output of Dr Gideon Susman’s EngD which we sponsored, and tested on a project. The “NewMass” system is a low energy cooling system composed of an array of finned tubes that sit below the ceiling of an occupied space. The tubes are filled with a ‘phase change material’ (PCM) that passively absorbs excess heat from the space through changing phase from a solid to a liquid. This innovative method, combining promising ‘phase change materials’ with existing chilled beam systems, is a very promising approach to driving more energy efficient systems into building designs.
