Environmental consultancy

Our local and global environment not only affects how we live, but how we design.  At BuroHappold we work with our clients to develop solutions that minimise environmental impacts and use of natural resources, whilst considering the local setting.

The challenge of protecting and enhancing our environment for future generations is at the forefront of what we do.  Our team of specialists work with clients and design teams from project initiation, through to design, procurement and construction.  We identify site opportunities and constraints, liaise with planning authorities, incorporate design mitigation measures and produce technical reports including environmental statements to obtain environmental approvals.

As a multi-disciplinary engineering practice, our clients benefit from an integrated approach to environmental consultancy, drawing on our experience across the globe in a range of sectors.

There is a growing backlog of urban infrastructure requirements and transportation relies primarily on privately provided mini-buses. Water and electricity household connections remain low and 80% of housing is ‘informal’. In the past, masterplans for the city have not been implemented due to a lack of coordinated planning and inadequate resources.

Consideration of the efficiency of energy use at the city-scale can present budget constrained cities with a significant opportunity to respond to their energy needs without sacrificing their development priorities. The World Bank’s Energy Sector Management and Assistance Programme recognised that for city authorities to successfully identify appropriate and feasible energy efficiency interventions, they need new and practical tools that inform the underpinning decision-making processes. Looking to catalyse more rapid understanding of city-scale energy use issues and appropriate responses, the World Bank commissioned BuroHappold to develop a Tool for Rapid Assessment of City Energy (TRACE).
