Bridges and civil structures

The bridges and civil engineering structures team at BuroHappold are experts in the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, tunnels and complex highway structures. Our fluency and knowledge of the design process along with our experience of liaising with local authorities, agencies, architects and contractors ensure that we deliver practical infrastructure solutions that closely match the aspirations of our clients.

Using the latest construction techniques and materials we have built up a reputation for expert engineering skills and creative flair on many high-profile projects worldwide.  Along the way we have developed strong working relationships with many leading bridge architects and have been successful in a number of international design competitions with our experience covering light span pedestrian bridges; road and rail bridges; link bridges and temporary bridges.  Commissions are undertaken for a variety of clients in both the public and private sectors.

The team have a wide repertoire of services that we feel are imperative to almost every infrastructure project, these include:

  • Steel, concrete and timber bridges
  • Movable bridges
  • Civil engineering structures
  • Planning applications and technical approvals
  • Finite element and dynamic analysis
  • Checking and construction supervision
  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening
  • Research and development

On every project we aim for an elegant and economical solution that meets the demands of the development.

The M8 Harthill footbridge is a landmark structure situated approximately halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, crossing Scotland’s busiest motorway.  Connecting the M8 Motorway’s first ever service station to the town of Harthill, it replaces an existing overbridge that has fallen into a state of disrepair. The M8 is the main East-West corridor through Scotland with the Heart of Harthill Services providing a well known midway point.  Several interesting sculptures line the route, the new structure will add to this providing an iconic gateway for motorway users passing from one side of the country to the other.
