Commercial residential

The world is changing. Cities are getting bigger, people are more mobile, the planet is becoming smaller and more fragile. Making a place called home is becoming increasingly difficult.

Constraints in land availability particularly in urban areas and the UK government’s aspirations to have zero carbon housing by 2016 are amongst some of the challenges that BuroHappold is helping its clients to overcome.

Winning the hearts and mind of communities, persuading and changing behaviours will be as big a challenge as the engineering.

Good design alone generates potential, but learning from buildings directly through post occupancy evaluation can create certainty. Our buildings are not considered in isolation. BuroHappold looks at what it really means for a neighbourhood to thrive, right from site investigations through to sustainable transport links, waste, water, energy and employment opportunities for local people.

Weaving together the various typologies of hotels, housing, entertainment spaces and offices is incredibly complex but it’s what we at BuroHappold thrive on. Creating desirable spaces where people want to live, work and play, balanced with creating sustainable properties, realising architectural aesthetics, navigating intricate planning laws, overcoming land shortages and achieving affordability is what BuroHappold does best.

Working closely with architects John Thompson and Partners, we prepared a detailed economic and spatial strategy to support a masterplan for the redevelopment of Dalian’s eastern coastal periphery. The proposed redevelopment, adjacent to the CBD of Dalian City, is substantial in scale incorporating former docks, shipyards, commercial zones, areas of natural beauty and a large petrochemical plant. The economic study involved significant data collection, analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary data sources, in order to best appraise alternative uses for the site.
