Stuart Martin

Stuart joined Buro Happold in 1998 to lead the practice’s fire engineering teams in central and northern England, and Scotland. With over 30 years experience in the construction industry, Stuart is a fire safety consultant with a keen interest in how fire safety solutions are seamlessly incorporated in to buildings so that the architecture of the spaces prevail.

Stuart has been actively involved with the development of fire safety strategy solutions for a wide range of buildings within public and private sectors where his role commences at the concepts for a building and continues through design, construction and occupation of the building. By working nationally and internationally he has gained invaluable experience in the challenge of explaining fire safety to different cultural backgrounds.

He has been involved in writing the guidance documents to support the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, working with partners on revisions and updates to The Building Regulations, and acted as a contributor and reviewer of the Buro Happold team drafting BS9999.

Stuart is an expert in legislation relating to fire safety in buildings and spends considerable time working with clients on their existing building stock to maximise regulatory compliance, whilst optimising utilisation and commercial returns. He has worked for a number of clients where issues relating to fire safety have been identified and the matter has been subject to a contractual claim, mediation and adjudication.
