Transport

Transport Planning is key to unlocking the potential and value of any new development within the built environment especially the opportunities around masterplanning the cities of the future. It is also key to re-creating thriving economies and communities when focusing on regeneration of existing urban environments in the UK and worldwide.

Imaginatively planned and environmentally executed transport hubs, marine ports, road networks, railway networks, rivers and canals contribute to creating community ‘wholeness’. They link communities to the outside world, create vital routes for commercial interchange and provide access and flow within public spaces linking to local transport interchanges.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary infrastructure team the Transport Planning Consultancy offers a wide range of planning and traffic engineering services to private and public sector clients. We have completed many prestige projects in the UK and around the world. Our main areas of work include masterplanning, transportation studies and assessments, local transport planning, parking studies, development of trip and parking manuals  and network capacity assessments. Our team brings multi-skilled expertise to such challenges as the integration of new transport innovations  into the existing network, traffic management and utility diversions.

To deliver reductions in carbon emissions the Buro Happold Transport Consultancy is particularly focused on encouraging the development of efficient public access transport hubs,  the adoption of more sustainable modes of travel and the promotion of planning that reduces the need for travel. Additionally to make roads safer for the travelling public and for commercial usage we employ comprehensive safety auditing and remedial engineering.

I25 US36 Express Lanes thumbnail

The I25 Express Lanes in Denver were originally built as seven miles of HOV and Rapid Bus Transit lanes between downtown Denver and the US36. In June 2006 they opened to traffic as express lanes which means that solo drivers are now also allowed to use the HOV lanes if they pay a toll. The lanes have proved very popular and there are now plans to extend the scheme along the US36 to Boulder. Although the construction of Phase I of the US36 is already underway, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDoT) and the High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) have proposed that the Phase II extension along the US36, along with Phase I and the existing I25 express lanes, should be combined into a single design, build, finance and operate concession.

The crossing at Atwater Park will be the first new pedestrian bridge to be built across the Los Angeles River in almost 20 years. Implemented as a public private partnership comprised of private donations, managed and built by the LA River Corporation and ultimately owned by the City, the 300 foot cable stay steel span is unique in its geometry in that the 140 foot tall pylon and cable system supporting the bridge is leaning forward over the deck structure and tensioned back to the river bank. Sited next to a major interstate highway, the strong visual dynamic of this composition gives the bridge the appearance of leaping across the river.

Today, cities face a number of challenges related to motorized transport such as congestion of city centres and environmental degradation. Taking into account these challenges and the rising number of car owners, individual car traffic seems insufficient for the urban challenges of the 21st century. Hence there is an urgent need to develop new mobility concepts that guarantee a high degree of individual mobility whilst facing the social, economic and environmental challenges of our future cities.

Dar Es Salaam faces some key social and economic challenges as one of the poorest countries in Africa, with growing inequality despite GDP growth of 5-6% per year. There is a growing backlog of urban infrastructure requirements and transportation relies primarily on privately provided mini-buses. Water and electricity household connections remain low and 80% of housing is ‘informal’. In the past, masterplans for the city have not been implemented due to a lack of coordinated planning and inadequate resources.
