Rail

With a vast knowledge and an in-depth skill base in the rail sector Buro Happold understands that rail related projects are complex by nature and require a diverse mix of engineering disciplines to achieve their successful delivery.

Be it the design of a station,  bridge, buildings, coastal defences or any of many other structures within a railway environment, we have the in depth experience to create innovative, economical and sustainable solutions to meet our clients’ varied briefs.

People movement, fire engineering and disability access requirements often need to be considered at the beginning rather than the end of the design process. Our rail sector is ideally placed to embrace these multi-disciplinary skills and provide holistic, coherent and integrated design solutions.

We are aware that the long term future of rail and its sustainable growth is largely dependent on doing things better, at lower cost and more efficiently. We are currently developing modular solutions, based around a proven and successful Buro Happold patented technology adapted to the benefit of station car parks and bridges.

Our aim, as ever, is to ensure creative solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of clients, striving for the best possible design, operational standards and ease of maintenance. An imaginative approach to design delivers unique, advanced projects, which is a key element in Buro Happold’s work.

The Docklands Light Railways (DLR) was initially developed as a new low cost transport system to access the areas where development would take place within the London Docklands Development Zone. Construction of the initial system started in 1984 and was opened to passengers in 1987. However, the success of the regeneration in the Docklands soon put pressure on this system, and demand grew for more extensions, especially to the south under the River Thames.
