Energy

Buro Happold’s Energy team is committed to sustainability, providing robust engineering solutions to reducing energy demand and use in the built environment.

Going beyond the conventional ‘mean, lean, green’ approach, we strive to develop efficient environmental solutions that include important issues such as productivity, wellbeing and longevity in adapting climates.

This is achieved through our close client relationships, desire to understand the end users of our buildings and appreciation of local resources and meteorological data.

We offer a vast range of services when dealing with energy in the built environment from individual occupation energy use analysis to city scale energy masterplans. Our team of specialist consultants are qualified in a range of environmental assessment tools such as BREEAM, LEED and Estidama.

Our energy work also covers community scale and city scale systems, as well as policy development, procurement and economic modelling. We offer end-to-end services from feasibility studies, business case development, procurement, detailed design and site supervision. Our team of utilities experts can also design the heating, electricity and cooling networks needed to distribute energy in the most efficient manner.

We have experts in a range of efficient, renewable and passive technologies, enabling us to influence both building design and policy developments. We also offer post occupancy evaluation and embodied energy analysis, which enables us to provide tailored energy reduction strategies based upon the actual building performance and intensity of materials.

Our portfolio of projects covers both new build and refurbishments at all scales.

London is leading the charge towards low carbon energy with the Mayor’s Energy and Carbon Mitigation Strategy. The strategy aims to deliver a truly significant 25% of the capital’s energy from decentralised sources by 2031, and we were commissioned to thoroughly investigate the best possible options to help achieve this milestone in the fight against climate change.

Consideration of the efficiency of energy use at the city-scale can present budget constrained cities with a significant opportunity to respond to their energy needs without sacrificing their development priorities. The World Bank’s Energy Sector Management and Assistance Programme recognised that for city authorities to successfully identify appropriate and feasible energy efficiency interventions, they need new and practical tools that inform the underpinning decision-making processes. Looking to catalyse more rapid understanding of city-scale energy use issues and appropriate responses, the World Bank commissioned Happold Consulting to develop a Tool for Rapid Assessment of City Energy (TRACE).
