Civic

The demand for improved public and civic facilities and spaces, whether refurbished or newly built is increasing all over the world. Fundamental to our everyday lives, civic buildings are often at the heart of our communities.  The diversity of this sector ranges from libraries and community centres to prisons and city halls, placing huge pressure on the clients who commission them.

The demand for quality civic and public facilities is increasing whether to meet the romanticism of the big society in the UK, to meet the expectations amongst the people of the Arab world following the Arab Spring or to satisfy any number of emerging, fast growing economies all over the world.

At Buro Happold we bring our international multi disciplinary experience to our projects to realise our clients vision from people flow and fire engineering, to reducing running costs and planning capital expenditure or inclusive design and security we create low carbon, efficient buildings that people and communities will be proud of.

Perched on the eastern edge of New York City, the Jamaica Bay parklands cover more than 10,000 acres of land surrounding one of the most bio-diverse urban estuaries on the Atlantic seaboard. Historically, sections of the parklands have been separately owned and managed by the federal National Park Service (NPS) and the city Department of Parks, with limited collaboration in land management and provision of services. Numerous other organizations ranging from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to non-profit land trusts are involved in advocacy for, and conservation of, various sections of the parklands.
