Buro Happold has concluded the first phase of Wembley Infrastructure (Phase One). We have been involved in the project since 2002, starting with a simple project that has evolved into us providing a wide cross-section of our services to find the right solutions to a series of challenging design issues.
Key facts
- High profile UK regeneration project where the new Demolition Protocol was specified in the planning conditions
- Buro Happold’s environmental consultants set a target of 80% for the proportion of rubble to be recycled during the first phase of the works

2 / Challenge
Wembley Infrastructure (Phase One) required co-ordination on a grand scale, with the teams behind the new Wembley National Stadium and refurbished Wembley Arena, and the London Borough of Brent on a 44-acre landholding in North-West London.
We were originally appointed to provide transport and engineering advice for the masterplan developed by Richard Rogers & Partners addressing the regeneration of the surrounding area.
3 / Solution
Following a sustainability assessment, our environmental consultants set a target of 80% for the proportion of rubble which could be recycled during the first phase of the works.
Wembley is one of the first high profile regeneration projects in the UK where the new Demolition Protocol was specified in the planning conditions. One of its aims is to re-use landfill rubble generated by demolition in the construction of new infrastructure and buildings – for example roads and hard standings.
4 / Value
Buro Happold is helping to develop the build strategy for the rest of the site as well as providing the structural engineering on the high class residential development adjacent to the arena.
