1 / Introduction

Wadi Al Asla is located approximately 15 kms to the east of the city of Jeddah. For over 20 years the wadi was partially used to store untreated sewage due to inadequate sewage treatment facilities in the city. This resulted in the formation of a sewage lake about 3 km2 in area.

The expansion of the city’s sewage treatment capacity and sewage network triggered a major cleaning up exercise. It also offered a great opportunity with the availability of treated sewage effluent to develop the site as a living green space for the people of Jeddah and the surrounding region.

The integrated development plan for Wadi Al Asla provides a high level development framework incorporating financial and technical feasibility with a concept masterplan. It identifies the activities, structuring principles and technical strategies to support future development. The plan is the basis for all future stages of development from detailed masterplanning, through to implementation and operations.
